It's very important to give your child the opportunity to prepare for JK.  It's a lot to adjust to without having any experience in a program first.

THIS IS THE CENTRE, CHILDREN WANT TO ATTEND.
You will see evidence of positive relationships, creativity, diversity, inclusion, friendships, engagement, expression, well-being, belonging, LOTS OF LEARNING,  and FUN !

If you are the kind of parent who wants to be involved in their child's Early Learning experiences, you will be so pleased to know that you can enrol your child at Columbus Playgroup, and you can volunteer to be a member of our parent Board of Directors.  We embrace parent support and work as a team with our Board members, educators, parents and families.  This is a key feature to belonging to a Co-operative and is one of the many benefits of our rather unique environment.  Such a joy to find a place where you know you belong. :)

Meet Our Team

At Columbus Community Playgroup - community is our middle name.  We are the community that works together, plays together, and succeeds together.  Parents, teachers and community contributing to the program and environment at CCPC, all for the benefit of the children. As a not-for-profit co-operative preschool, we absolutely depend on our members. The supervisor and teachers work together to build relations with the children and their families, to design plans and developmentally appropriate programming in response to the children in our care, and to provide feedback and guidance to the Board of Directors. Parent volunteers form a board of directors, and function by following a protocol  of activities and procedures.  The Board of Directors provide leadership and guidance in the governance of the Playgroup, take care of the responsibilities of the business, and guide work with all parents to support and develop policies as is appropriate. Board members meet approximately once per month at the Playgroup.  Other CCPC parents choose a role from a variety of committees. These committees include Toy Cleaners, Laundry,  Family Events/ Fund-raiser Committee, Special Events Committee, Monthly Newsletter, PR/ Facebook.  Contributions from each person are valued and essential to the overall success of the Playgroup.  It's a wonderful bonus, that many of our parents also report life-long friendships that grew from associations at Columbus Playgroup.  We are currently looking for a dedicated Bookkeeper for the playgroup.

Families enrolled at Columbus Community Playgroup become welcome members and valued participants on the team, that serve the needs of the children and community. Roles are gauged to respect the busy lives of our members.  The rewards are plentiful.
A Brief History:   Columbus Playgroup was founded in 1987 by the collaborative efforts of 5 families from the local community who wished to create both social opportunities as well as learning opportunities for children and parents.  A teacher was hired for 2 mornings per week.  Later it became 2 classes of 12, scheduled over 4 mornings.  An afternoon class was added in 1996 for one or two years.  A re-structured afternoon class was founded in 2004 as a 3-day program.  When all-day every-day kindergarten absorbed large numbers of children from other centres,  CCPC decided to increase the afternoon class schedule to 4 afternoons per week, to provide families with an alternative to JK. 2017 marks the 30th. Anniversary of the founders' efforts.  The Co-operative has grown from the 5 families who originally met in the basement of the church next door, to the respected and successful centre for early learning and care that it is today.  As a fully licensed early learning centre, with 3 classes of children operating each week, Columbus Playgroup now serves about 48+ children each week.  The majority of CCPC members learned about the playgroup through word-of-mouth.  CCPC proudly acknowledges and appreciates that so much of its growth and success is due to the many Playgroup families who have referred their relatives, friends and neighbours to the Playgroup.  Each year, the members build upon and enhance the legacy that is left for future members and guests of the Playgroup. Most recently, Columbus Playgroup has become highly regarded as a high-quality, inclusive learning centre for our exceptional and multi-cultural members.
